Siniat Prégybel is the acoustic tile of choice for the City of Joburg Mayor’s Office
Johannesburg is the economic and financial hub of South Africa – after all, it’s not called the City of Gold because of its glittering skyscrapers only.
It is one of the 50 top cities in the world (the only city in Africa) designated as worldwide centres of commerce. In fact, millions have been injected to develop this concrete jungle into a seamless international investment hot pot.
Also injecting value in this bustling hub is the Executive Mayor’s Office in the City of Johannesburg (CoJ). By managing the affairs of the city and taking overarching strategic decisions, this is the administrative heartbeat of a very vibrant metropolis. In this office and its meeting rooms, weighty and sensitive matters, including far-reaching decisions, are taken by the mayor and his appointed mayoral committee. Each member of the mayoral committee is responsible for a particular portfolio within the city structure.
In late 2017, the mayor’s office underwent extensive refurbishment to modernise and improve the working space and its facilities. No doubt aesthetic inspiration was needed, given the substantial discussions and decisions that emanate from this environment.
The project included the mayor’s private office, the executive boardroom, managers’ offices, bathrooms and the foyer area.
Acoustics were a central part of the ergonomic considerations in the refurbishment. MDesign Spaces, the architectural design consultants, took two types of acoustical issues into consideration:
• Sound isolation – to ensure that all areas of the Mayor’s Office were acoustically isolated from outside noise, as well as the need to stop private conversations from being heard outside all corners of the mayor’s office.
• Speech intelligibility – to facilitate discussions over the length of the long meeting table, and therefore the need to reduce noise from air conditioning systems and outside noise sources.
Why Siniat Prégybel was the first choice as an acoustical solution
Siniat Prégybel provides a high-performance system that is ideal for meeting both noise reduction and quality design specifications. With an acoustic absorption of 0.60 Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) and a complete one-step installation, Siniat Prégybel is a cost-effective solution for achieving sound absorption specifications. In a nutshell, acoustic absorption is the process by which a material, structure, or object takes in sound energy when sound waves are encountered.
Siniat Prégybel has an attractive appearance, featuring square perforations which is an additional benefit for large open area ceilings and walls. This is perfect, for example, in foyers, conference rooms and theatres, where aesthetics are as important as acoustic performance. It is available in tiles of 12,5mm x 1200mm x 2400mm dimensions.
Additionally, Siniat Prégybel solutions are covered by the Marley InSpec 10-year warranty when part of specially designed project packs are put together by Marley Building Systems’ specification and technical teams.
The added value
Mr Nqaba Mangcu, the project leader from MDesign Spaces, says that the choice of Siniat Prégybel was an easy one to make. “The choice of the product was 100% ours. No one influenced us. Part of the appeal was that you also get a guarantee [InSpec] from Marley on the product.”
He said the Marley Building Systems’ product range and information appealed to him for so many reasons. “They have an impressive and wide range and the online brochures made it very easy to navigate and choose. I was also glad that the process was so simple and doable myself that I didn’t require the help of a technical person because everything was available at my fingertips.”
Beyond product availability and performance, Mangcu had higher expectations from the supplier: “I was working around the clock on this project. So I needed a quick turnaround from all my suppliers.”
What impressed him more was the after-sales service: “What I really liked from Marley was the technical support, coming to site and checking that the installation was up to their high standard,” said Mangcu.
